This authentic and adventurous trip aims at making tourists discover the TRUE way of life of Mongolian herders (basic comfort but deep feelings!). Besides the herders diversify their income and hence they finance projects on a local scale.
- Price: 530 USD per person including : local transport to go to the departure point, the trip with a local Mongolian guide, overnights under ger, meals taken with the families. Luggage will be carried by pack ox.

- Level of difficulty: average level. You will cover from 15 to 20 kms per day.

- Backpack needed: sleeping bag, brogue shoes, flask, sun cream face, first aid kit (i.e. suction poison, bandage, plaster, water purifying pills, mosquito repellent, etc. …)

- Possible departures on Mondays and Thursdays

- Program:

Day 1 : Morning departure (local transport) to Olziit village (Arkhangaï region, located to the North side of the Ogii lake / Olziit’s highlights: ancient monastery, cervidae steles). Overnight at the Tumurbaatar’s (1st family).
Day 2 : Departure by foot to the 2nd family, the Joovon.
Day 3 : Journey (by foot) to the 3rd family, the Blodsukh. Highlights: rock paintings and kereksur.
Day 4 : Journey (by foot) to the 4th family, the Dashzeveg.
Day 5 : Journey (by foot) to the 5th family, the Davaa. Highlight : springs.
Day 6 : Journey back (by foot) to the 4th family.
Day 7 : Journey (by foot) from 4th family to the 6th one, the Boldoo
Day 8 : Journey (by foot) to the 1st family, the Tumurbaatar
Day 9 : Departure to Olziit and trip back by local transport to UB

 

Detailed itinerary of our “ger to ger” trip
1st Day-8 am :local transport to Olziit village. The arrival time is scheduled at about 6 pm. Olziit is a small village with a secondary school, a small monastery called “Altanzuu”, an hospital, a kinder garden and shops. You will arrive in the evening in the 1st nomadic family.The master of the house is called Tumurbaatar and is 28, his wife, who is 25 is called Ankhaa. They got a son who is quite young. They own oxes and cows, sheep, goats and horses. He is a horse trainer as his father used to be.

2nd Day –You will be walking to the 2nd family. First you will go over a hill called “Ikhbulag”. Near Ikhbulag, you can see big rocks : this place is both wild and sacred. Every 12 years take place a worship ceremony : the God of nature receives a horse so that weather be mild. The horse is well saddled, well bridled and then the oldest and the youngest man kill the horse and burry him. This hill is a sacred hill, as a result only men are allow to go there. During the socialist period this worship ceremony was not performed but ever since it ended the ceremony took already place twice.

You will then walk down the hill and keep going along the bottom of a mountain, “Guruust undur”.

This very day you will arrive to a young family. Joovon is the master of the ger. He got a little baby and his wife’s name is Tuya. They own 18 oxes and cows, 60 sheep, 20 goats and 16 horses.

3rd Day – You will be walking toward the Bichigt uul mountain (the mountain with the old scripts and rock paintings). These scripts have been told to be 5000-year-BC-scripts.
You will arrive at Boldsukh’s. His wife is teacher at the kindergarten of the village. During Summers she is on holidays. They together got a little daughter. Their cattle amounts for 120 animals, sheep, goats, ox and horses.

4th Day – Today, along your walking, you will see two kind of tombs. The first stone tomb is located in the “Mungunii khundii” steppe (the silver valley). This kind of tomb dated at the 7th century, i.e. at the Ouigoure period. The second tomb is located near the sacred mountain “Olzod”. This tomb is a really interesting and ancient artefact:: it dated at around the bronze age. People living here belong to the ethnic group “Uuld” coming from the West of Mongolia. They wandered there during the 16th century. The second queen “Anujin”, from the Western kingdom of Mongolia, together with her soldiers took part to the war against the Manchus. But the general in chief of her army betrayed her and she lost the war. The King of Manchuria ceased then the place where Olziit is currently located. But the soldiers were exhausted and poor. They thus decided to excavate this tomb to seek wealth. They found more ancient crafts than they expected and they gave them to people. Thank to that gift people could buy cattle, gers, living products. Since then the Uulds had started worshiping the Olzod mountain located right behind the tomb.

You will arrive today at Dashzeveg’s aka Dada. He has got 4 children aged from 10 to 20. He lives with his wife Lkhagva, their daughter Bulgaa, their sons Norovoo, Erdenee and Chuuka and their grand son. They own 230 animals : horses, sheep, goats and ox. Dada is a horse trainer. His second son is a very good horse rider and participates in horse races.

5th Day –You will walk up to the spring of the Bodont river. Along the way is located a little ovoo and 3 willows. People here worship this place as it is told to nest the spirit of the nature. The 1st day of spring thus people come here to demand a mild weather, good health and happiness.

Today Davaa will welcome you. He has got 6 children with whom he lives together with his wife Maral. His 1st daughter is married. He also owns goats, sheep, ox and horses. You will be given the opportunity to see yaks, they belong to the neighbouring family.

6th Day – You will climb up to the summit of the Alagmorit moutain and then come back to Dada’s.

7th Day – You will be walking toward the Khachuu river and you will see a little natural canyon.
The family welcoming you today is Boldoo’s family. He has got 3 children whose 2 of them are going to primary school. and his wife is called Jargalbat. The cattle amounts to 156 animals : 90 sheep, 30 goats, 16 horses and 20 cows. Years ago they ran a restaurant as well as a little shop.

8th Day – Walk to the Orkhon river. You will have a look there to an ancient tomb. Today you will be wandering through steppe landscapes while coming back to Tumurbaatar.
